If you're looking for an easy appetizer idea that's sure to cue the nostalgia, try making Hot Buttered Cheerios®. The mix is similar to a classic party snack, but with a rich, buttery flavor. Try our original version, or get creative with churro-inspired Cinnamon Sugar. We're also sharing a savory Cheesy-Garlic version as well. Here's how to make Hot Buttered Cheerios®, including a simple trick for reheating in the microwave.

What Are Hot Buttered Cheerios®?

Hot buttered Cheerios® is very simply cereal that's been cooked in butter with seasonings. Our basic Hot buttered Cheerios® recipe is made with butter and Worcestershire sauce. For the most flavor, be sure to toast the cereal until it's golden brown. This helps bring out the nuttiness of the whole grains in the cereal

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 4 cups Cheerios® cereal

Directions

  1. Melt butter in an extra-large skillet over medium heat. Stir in Worcestershire sauce. Add cereal. Cook and stir just until starting to brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from skillet. Serve warm.

Cinnamon Sugar Hot Buttered Cheerios®

  1. Replace Worcestershire sauce with 1/2 tsp. vanilla. After melting butter, add vanilla and cereal. Cook and stir until just starting to brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from skillet. In a large bowl combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tsp. ground cinnamon. Add hot cooked cereal to the bowl; toss to coat.

Cheesy Garlic Hot Buttered Cheerios®

  1. Omit Worcestershire sauce. After melting butter, add cereal. Cook and stir until just starting to brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from skillet. In a large bowl combine 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1 tsp. dried parsley, and 1/2 tsp. garlic powder. Add hot cereal to the bowl; toss to coat.

Microwave Directions

  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl melt butter on 100% power for 20 seconds. Stir in Worcestershire or vanilla extract. Add cereal, microwave 1 1/2 minutes longer, stirring every 30 seconds, until cereal is hot and beginning to become crisp. Place Cinnamon-Sugar or Cheesy Garlic coating in a small bowl. Pour either seasoning mixture over hot cereal and toss to coat.

How to Store Leftover Snack Mix

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 1 week. Reheat in the microwave on 100% power for 10 seconds, if desired.
