Head to your pantry to make this easy apple dump cake recipe. It's as simple as layering apple pie filling, cake mix, pecans, and butter into your slow cooker. After just a few hours, you'll have a warm, spiced dessert that's best enjoyed warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Here's how to make our Test Kitchen's best slow cooker apple dump cake recipe.

Tips for Making the Best Slow Cooker Apple Dump Cake

Keep these helpful tips in mind when making this apple cake.

  • You'll need 3 21-ounce cans of apple pie filling to fill a 6-quart oval slow cooker.
  • Unlike other dump cakes where the butter is sliced and placed on top before baking, here we're melting the butter and mixing it with the cake mix.
  • For the most flavor, toast the pecans before adding them to the topping.
  • We're using yellow cake mix, but you could also swap in white cake mix or spice cake.

Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray

  • 3 (21-ounce) cans apple pie filling

  • 1 package yellow cake mix

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

  • 1/2 cup pecans, toasted and chopped

  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice

  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Directions

  1. Add Filling

Coat the insert of a 6-qt oval slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Pour pie filing into the slow cooker.

  2. Make Topping

In a medium bowl, combine cake mix, melted butter, pecans, and apple pie spice. Stir until cake mix is moistened. Crumble mixture over the apple pie filling.

  3. Cook and Serve

Place a clean kitchen towel or two layers of paper towels between the lid and the rim of the slow cooker insert to absorb steam. Cover with the lid. Cook on high 2 1/2 hours. Remove insert from cooker. Let stand, uncovered, 15 minutes before serving. Serve with ice cream, if desired.
